Physical storytelling rooted in presence, specificity, and ensemble awareness
I work as a choreographer and movement specialist, collaborating with directors, performers, and designers to craft movement that is precise, expressive, and deeply connected to narrative intention. My work emphasizes the body as a communicative instrument and supports performers in making clear physical choices that serve character, story, and ensemble.
My approach bridges actor training, contemporary movement practices, and traditional dance foundations, allowing me to support a wide range of performers and production styles.
Scope of the Work
As a choreographer and movement specialist, I support productions in which movement is integral to storytelling, whether overtly choreographed or subtly embedded in performance.
This work may include:
- Developing a movement vocabulary for a production or ensemble
- Choreographing sequences rooted in character and narrative
- Supporting physical specificity within blocking
- Guiding performers toward sustainable, repeatable movement choices
- Supporting non-dancers in accessing complex physical storytelling
- Crafting transitions, tableaus, and ensemble movement
Movement, in my work, is always in service of clarity, intention, and the needs of the story.
Movement Lineage & Physical Foundation
My movement practice is informed by a broad range of theatrical and embodied methodologies, including Laban Movement Analysis, Viewpoints, Forsythe Improvisational Technologies, ensemble-based devising practices, and mindfulness- and presence-based training.
In addition to these contemporary theatre practices, my work is supported by a strong foundation in traditional movement training. I grew up in a dance studio and trained in ballet, modern, jazz, and acrobatics. I also have experience with swing dance and other partner dance forms, capoeira, yoga, and pilates.
This range of training informs how I approach alignment, balance, rhythm, and weight, as well as partnering, shared focus, and physical trust. Rather than working toward a single aesthetic, I draw from this vocabulary to meet the needs of the production and the ensemble.
Working with Performers
I am particularly skilled at working with actors who do not identify as dancers. I prioritize accessibility, safety, and clarity, supporting performers in finding physical expressiveness rooted in impulse rather than replication.
In rehearsal, I focus on:
- Reducing unnecessary tension
- Developing full-body listening and responsiveness
- Supporting impulse-driven movement
- Building ensemble awareness and shared focus
- Translating abstract concepts into actionable physical choices
This approach empowers performers to move with confidence, specificity, and agency.
Integration with Directing, Design, and Intimacy Work
My work as a movement specialist often intersects with directing, puppetry, and intimacy direction. I collaborate closely with the director to ensure that movement aligns with pacing, tone, and narrative focus.
I am attentive to:
- The relationship between movement and scenic space
- Costume and prop considerations
- Physical storytelling in moments of vulnerability or proximity
- Transitions between spoken text and physical action
This integrated approach supports cohesive, embodied productions.
