Devising & New Work Development

Creating original performance through ensemble research and shared authorship

I work as a devisor, collaborating with ensembles to create original performance through research, physical exploration, and iterative composition. My devising practice centers process, presence, and collective intelligence, supporting groups in generating work that is intentional, rigorous, and performable.

I am drawn to devising as a way of thinking together through the body. The work unfolds through listening, experimentation, and refinement, allowing meaning to emerge from action, relationship, and structure rather than from a predetermined script.

Devising Practice

As a devisor, I help ensembles move from inquiry to performance. I support groups in identifying core questions, generating material, and shaping that material into coherent theatrical form.

My work often explores:

  • Ensemble authorship and shared responsibility
  • Physical and spatial composition
  • Research-driven performance making
  • Non-linear and image-based storytelling
  • The accumulation of meaning through repetition and variation

I am particularly interested in how attention, restraint, and specificity allow devised work to remain grounded and legible.

Process and Structure

I design devising processes that balance openness with clarity. While experimentation is central to the work, I provide frameworks that help ensembles stay oriented and avoid creative diffusion.

Common elements of my devising process include:

  • Establishing shared values and working agreements
  • Guided improvisation and structured exploration
  • Cycles of generation, selection, and refinement
  • Ongoing reflection and dramaturgical shaping
  • Clear transitions from research to rehearsal to performance

I am comfortable holding ambiguity during early phases of creation, and I am attentive to the moment when the work requires commitment and form.

Methodologies and Influences

My devising practice is informed by established ensemble-based methodologies, including:

  • Viewpoints
  • Tectonic Moment Work
  • Forsythe Improvisational Technologies
  • Laban Movement Analysis
  • Physical theatre and movement-based composition learned in training in the Towson University MFA program

These tools serve the ensemble rather than dictate the outcome. I adapt methodologies to the needs of the group, the context of the project, and the questions at the heart of the work.

Collaboration and Care

Devising demands trust, time, and care. I prioritize consent-aware practices, clear communication, and attention to sustainability throughout the process.

I work to create spaces where:

  • Risk-taking is supported by structure
  • All contributors understand their role in authorship
  • Physical and emotional boundaries are respected
  • Disagreement can be generative rather than divisive

This approach supports both artistic rigor and the long-term health of the ensemble.

Context & Experience

I bring more than two decades of experience as a devisor, performer, director, and movement specialist. My devised work has been presented in academic, professional, and international contexts, including at the Varna International Theatre Festival in Bulgaria.

My background in puppetry, movement, and interdisciplinary performance strongly informs how I approach composition and ensemble collaboration.
